Natural Flood Management
Miles Water Engineering has extensive experience of implementing Natural Flood Management measures in a wide range of sensitive environments. Known to be an effective strategy in reducing flood and coastal erosion risk, Natural Flood Management involves implementing measures that help to protect, restore and simulate the natural functions of catchments, floodplains, rivers and the coast.
Examples might include general river restoration, restoring bends in rivers, changing the way land is managed so soil can absorb more water and creating wetlands or saltmarshes on the coast to absorb wave energy.
Natural flood management not only reduces flood risk it can also achieve multiple benefits for people and wildlife, helping restore natural habitats, improve water quality, biodiversity, farmland value and helping make catchments more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
Miles Water has the experience and knowledge to design and implement these measures, often in challenging environments, to ensure that the appropriate techniques are used to fulfil the demands of each project; balancing aesthetics with performance, budgets and environmental sustainability. Many of the projects we have been involved with have benefited from grant funding, we can offer recommendations on how to pursue this option.
Our portfolio of past projects, which includes the Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust, AONB, Estuary Partnerships, River Trusts, Piscatorial Societies, private land owners, housing developments, the Environment Agency and Natural England.
